Another ideal companion to the CF-080LSX2 Line Stage Preamp. Based on an acclaimed Philips multi-bit processor, and with a vacuum tube buffer stage, extracts every bit of information from standard CD’s, without relying on any kind of up-sampling, over-sampling, etc. and raises expectations for red book audio CD’s to a new level. Advances the state-of-the-art of CD reproduction, just as we celebrate the 25 years since introduction of CD Audio. Access to vacuum tubes from outside rear panel encouraging tube rolling. For us at Z-Axis, this DAC has quashed considerations of looking at Hi-resolution downloads as a performance improvement over 16bit/44.1khz Redbook CD.

The DAC 040 does require a very good transport to hear the musical prowess that it is capable of, due to having no filters or upsampling (NOS). We use the MBL 1621a as a transport which works beautifully. We are able to supply any MBL transport to partner the DAC-040BD.

As of April 2013, the ‘BD’ upgrade to the DAC became available, incorporating a NIMH battery drive to the D-A section, thus bringing total isolation from the mains at purely the critical point. We have a demonstration unit including the battery drive option and new style casework with the ‘Operation/Standby’ switch now located on the front edge of the left side panel for convenience. We are one of the first dealers worldwide to hear this upgrade, and are naturally very excited, as the DAC 040 as standard is already absolutely wonderful, but including this upgrade it is very special indeed! Transparency, detail, tonality, dynamics, the list goes on – all benefitting in no uncertain way from powering the DA convertor chipset by NIMH battery. We are left in no doubt that for redbook CD, this surely must be getting close to the limit, and we have no desire to go to Hi-RES, as with this convertor we already have it.

DAC 040BD is always available for demonstration.

Quote from Steve Hoffman, world renowned mastering engineer regarding his DAC 040:

“Concert Fidelity has been a crucial part of my music listening experience and restoration mastering work for many years now. My CF-080 line stage, DAC-040 D/A Converter and playback amplifiers (all designed by Concert Fidelity’s Masataka Tsuda) have never failed to amaze me. Whether I’m working on remastering Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Phil Collins, Crosby- Stills & Nash or just listening to music for pleasure, the Concert Fidelity gear I use is my state-of-the-art benchmark for audiophile excellence. I would be lost without it.” – Steve Hoffman, Mastering Engineer.
